MoGo entered the 2007 computer games Olympiads in 9x9 Go and Go (19x19), which had been played this week in Amsterdam. Whereas it is not science, and nothing is significant in the results (not thousands games), you may be interested by some results. First part was 9x9 Go, and everyone expected a domination of MoGo and CrazyStone. An unknown program "Steenvreter" surprised everyone and won the tournament. This program is based on MC/UCT algorithm (surprised? :-p), with added knowledge at the end of simulations to score positions where status of groups is unconditionally known (not playing all the dame filling). Whereas this program is weaker in the opening and middle game, it is so strong in end game tactics that it managed to take advantage of some bad mistakes of MoGo and CrazyStone to win 1/2 vs MoGo and 2/2 vs CrazyStone. Final result was 16/18 for Steenvreter, 15/18 for MoGo and CrazyStone. MoGo eventually won the Silver Medal in the playoff, winning 2/2 against CrazyStone. (complete results here: http://www.grappa.univ-lille3.fr/icga/tournament.php?id=169) Second part was Go (19x19) The organizers changed the schedule to set the CrazyStone vs MoGo game in the last round, which was commented live on KGS by Guo Jan, 5 dan professionnal. The two programs was expected to be at the top, and whereas some difficult games until middle game (vs Mango and Gnugo for CrazyStone and vs Mango for MoGo), the 2 programs managed to have 6/6 before the final game. The final game CrazyStone vs MoGo attracted more than 380 observors on KGS (!!!) thanks to the announcement and the comments of Guo Jan (unfortunately, her comments were not recorded, but it was really funny because of the strange style of our programs). MoGo was told "romantic" (sic) in the opening, and CrazyStone serious, but MoGo dropped his romantic style in the middle game to fight not so bad, and eventually won the game, and with it the tournament. (complete results here: http://www.grappa.univ-lille3.fr/icga/tournament.php?id=167) The winner was expected to play games against Guo Jan live on KGS, 19x19, 9 stones handicap and 9x9 without handicap. In 19x19 there were no really games, the professional managed to kill everything ;) and MoGo resigned. Nevertheless, the games attracked again (you can find them on KGS, login: "MoGoBot19") between 100 and 250 observors. Then, she played 9x9 games. She already played 9x9 games against MoGo in the previous days, playing white without komi (i.e. big advantage for black on 9x9), and lost about 75% of her games. After the tournament, she played black with komi (even game), and lost her first game! While she was overconfident in that particular game, and won the 2 other games telling she can learn weaknesses of the program, I believe this was the first win of a program against a professional player 9x9 even game. I guess we can't say anymore than Go program are at beginners level on 9x9 ;) .
