Analogy with Large Scale Physics Instrument:
The right-side image shows the Cosmotron of the Brookhaven Lab. (first accelerator to reach 1 Gev)
Grid Explorer will gather 3 components: a 1k nodes PC Cluster, an Experimental Condition Data Base and a tool set  (emulators, simulators).  Grid Explorer would have approximatively the same foot print as the Cosmotron, if arranged in the same shape. One can imagine experimental condition data bases located at the center of the instrument and the experiment specific units (high speed networks, large storage units, routers, etc.) attached at its perimeter.
