Candyce: Computational Notebooks for Education

Candyce (CArnets Numériques DYnamiques, interactifs et Collaboratifs pour l’Enseignement) is a sovereign French e-infrastructure project for education based on open-source scientific software, and in particular the interactive computational environment Jupyter. It was prompted by the success of grassroot initiatives such as Capytale — 100k daily users in French lower education — and many other deployments in higher education and industry, for both teaching computational sciences and teaching using computational sciences. Soon after its inception in early 2021 by INRIA, Nicolas M. Thiéry (GALaC, AAC, LISN) was invited to join as technical director.

Candyce was originally designed as a 12M€ work package of the PEPR «Enseignement et Numérique» which after two years+ of positive reviews was eventually cancelled in mid 2023. Meanwhile, preparatory actions are conducted using local funding such as the CMA SaclAI-School, and other sources of funding are being investigated with the support of Inria and France Université.
